Accelerating Scientific Discovery
In a new multi-year collaboration, Microsoft and the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have joined forces to advance scientific discovery and sustainable energy research. Leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing, this partnership aims to revolutionize the search for the ultimate battery.
By utilizing Microsoft’s Azure Quantum platform, which combines AI with quantum computing, the collaboration seeks to overcome the traditionally slow pace of materials research. The goal is to uncover the key components that will lead to more powerful, longer-lasting, and environmentally friendly batteries.
“Sift through the vast chemical universe to find the building blocks of more powerful, longer-lasting, and environmentally friendly batteries.” – Microsoft and PNNL collaboration
Thanks to AI-powered search algorithms, the partnership has already made significant progress. By analyzing a massive database of millions of candidates, the AI has narrowed down the options to a focused group of 500,000, a task that would have been impossible for human researchers alone.
These promising candidates are now undergoing intensive computational simulations at PNNL to further investigate their potential.
